Skype 1.0 for Windows Phone Now Available

Skype for Windows Phone 7Microsoft has officially launched version 1.0 of Skype for Windows Phone, which is now available on the Windows Phone Marketplace. Skype, as you know, is the highly popular face chat service used by millions of people around the world. With the release of Skype 1.0 for the Windows Phone, users will now be able to face chat with other Windows Phone users whenever and wherever they want to.

The app, which is a free 6MB download for the Windows Phone, runs on Windows Phone 7.5 devices and higher and works over WiFi or 3G. Version 1.0 updates the app, replacing the beta version of the app which was released by Microsoft back in February of this year., who was the first to report on the app’s release, has noted that version 1.0 release3 adds the ability to search for and add new contacts as well as to call landlines. Unfortunately, this version of the app does not allow background calling, which means that the app will only allow someone to call you using Skype if you have the phone on and the app open.

Microsoft is expected to integrate Skype more efficiently with the Windows Phone 8 operating system when it is released. Early leaks have, however, stated that Skype will remain a standalone app by the time Windows Phone 8 debuts sometime before the end of the 2012 calendar year.

In addition to the Skype app for Windows Phone, there are also Skype apps available on the iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices. It was also noted by WPCentral that the 2.0 version of Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud-storage app for Windows Phone is available in the Windows Phone Marketplace as well. Microsoft’s SkyDrive team also recently added ODF document support and URL shortening in addition to some other new features.
