Apple’s Big iPhone Event Unveils The iPhone 6 Plus “Phablet”

iphone 6sHey look everybody! Apple has announced it’s first phablet! That’s right, along with the expected announcement of the Apple iPhone 6 the Cupertino company also announced the very first Apple phablet. Phablet is techie slang for a devicethat is larger than a smartphone but not quite big enough to be considered a tablet. Known as the iPhone 6 Plus, this device is a hefty version of the iPhone 6 that comes with a larger 5.5″ screen over the iPhone 6’s 4.7″.The iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299 for the 16GB version with the 64GB running $399 and the 128GB running $499. This does mark a $100 upcharge from the regular iPhone 6 and these prices do require a 2-year contract. Off-contract pricing for T-Mobile in the US is listed at $749, $849 and $949, respectively, with UK prices running £619, £699 and £789, respectively. The larger screen for the Plus comes with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, an improvement over the standard model. This will be a welcome feature for some iPhone users but it still can’t compete with the ultra high-definition resolutions of phones like the Quad HD Note 4. However, Apple is referring to the new screen as Retina HD, claiming that it has “extra sharpness”.When it comes to screen resolutions the difference between the old iPhone and the smallest iPad was huge. The 1080p HD resolution of the Plus could become the new standard for Retina display technology. Aside from the screen resolution and size the Plus features pretty much everything that the standard version does, which includes iOS 8 and the same 64-bit A8 chip. The new processor is said to allow 50% faster graphics along with a 25% faster CPU.The bigger battery of the Plus is said to allow for 24 hours of talk time on a 3G connection, which gives it an extra 10 hours over the iPhone 6. That may seem like a nice improvement but users of other smartphones (namely Samsung Galaxy users) will point out that they are able to swap batteries for fresh ones whereas Apple still doesn’t offer that option.

The camera is also different from the 6 to the Plus. Both have 8MP with some nice upgrades, like faster autofocus and slow-motion video up to 240 fps, which is double that of the iPhone 5. The difference is that the optical image stabilization found on the Plus is not found on the 6. What makes things worse is that other phones, like the Galaxy Note 4, come with this option as well.

Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have built-in NFC chips that allow for easier ways to pay for purchases in addition to TouchID fingerprint security features that were found on the iPhone 5S. During the event Apple also debuted Apple Pay. Apple Pay is a new feature in iOS that streamlines the retail and online purchasing experience while also taking advantage of these features.

The press event was a big one for Apple. In addition to the announcements of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the announcement of Apple Pay, the company also debuted the Apple Watch, the company’s first foray into the smartwatch market. If you’re eager to get your hands on either of the new smartphones (Note: The iPhone 6 Plus will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold) from Apple then act fast as pre-orders go up on September 12 with the phones releasing on September 19.
