Acer Debuts New Iconia Tab 8

Iconia A1Last week Taiwanese PC maker Acer debuted its 8″ Android tablet, which is set to hit store shelves in the third quarter of this year. Known as the Iconia Tab 8 this tablet features a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution as well as an Intel Atom quad-core Z3745 processor known as “Bay Tail” at the moment. The Iconia Tab 8 follows the company’s announcement of two smaller 7″ tablets, the Iconia One 7 and Iconia Tab 7 last month.

Both of these smaller tablets have screen resolutions of 1280 x 800 and were designed to target lower-end consumers. In terms of the Iconia One 7 this tablet uses an older Intel “Clover Trail” processor and has a base starting price of $129.99.

The starting price point of the Iconia Tab 8 was not disclosed by Acer during the reveal though the company is seeking to build affordable tablets with great value, according to President of Acer’s Tablet Business Maverick Shih. According to Shih, “We want everyone to be able to enjoy the features you can find in high-end products.”

The Iconia Tab 8 weighs in at 360 grams and has a metallic back cover along with anti-fingerprint coating on its display. In addition to that, the tablet runs Android 4.4 and promises 7.5 hours of battery life when watching videos, which is the one application that drains the most battery life from any mobile device.

Acer also failed to mention any information on the tablet’s memory features, though the device is said to have a microSD card slot to add more storage. In addition to that, Acer also declined to name which markets the product will be available in, though Shih did say last week that mainland China has become a big focus for the company’s tablet business.

In a statement from Shih he said, “Before, we didn’t really value the Chinese market enough.” In order to change that the company has created a new China-based team that is focused exclusively on tablets, according to Shih. These upcoming tablets from Acer will also incorporate more of the company’s own software. The company has been promoting consumer cloud services as of late known as “Build Your Own Cloud”. These services are already pre-installed on Acer devices and work by letting users automatically synchronize the files and multimedia on their different devices.

Tablets are becoming more and more popular among consumers so its nice to see Acer looking at both ends of the spectrum with the higher-end Iconia Tab 8 and the lower-end Iconia One 7 and Iconia Tab 7. The information on the Iconia Tab 8 from Acer is sparse at the moment but keep it locked here as we will be delivering you all the information on this device as it unfolds.
