Samsung Finally Announces the Galaxy S4, Due to Ship in April

Samsung Galaxy S4Well, the time has finally come (as if any of you were actually surprised), Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S4 smartphone, the successor to the extremely popular Galaxy S3. The device was revealed at the Unpacked event in New York City and takes up the mantle of Samsung’s flagship smartphones.

The S4 sports a very large 5″ 1080p Super AMOLED display with a 441ppi pixel density, which is quite an increase from the S3’s  306ppi display or the iPhone 5’s 326ppi Retina display. Even though this device is similar to last year’s S3, the design has been upgraded to include a thinner bezel along with a sleeker metal trim around the edges.

However, the most exciting additions are the new features, including Samsung’s suite of user-tracking functions. These functions include Smart Pause, which utilizes the front-facing camera to detect when you look away from a video you are watching and pauses the video automatically; Air View, which allows users to scroll through pages with a wave of the hand (similar to Kinect for Xbox); and Floating Touch controls, which take Samsung’s S Pen concept and applies it to your fingers, which enables you to point and hover over an item to view it.

The camera technology in the S4 has also been given a major overhaul. The S4 comes with a built-in 13MP camera (over the S3’s 8MP) which has new functions like Dual Shot, Eraser, Drama Shot and Sound & Shot. Dual Shot allows you to capture images from both the front and rear cameras simultaneously. Eraser captures multiple frames so that you can remove unwanted subjects (goodbye photobombing) while Drama Shot composites moving objects for “action shots”. Then there is Sound & Shot, which captures 5 seconds of images and audio before the capture button is pressed.

The S4 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, though Samsung has developed a suite of its very own new software too. The S4 will ship with a new photo album publishing service, similar to Apple’s greeting card service. This allows you to design a custom photo album directly from your phone that will be shipped directly to your house.

In addition to that, the S4 also ships with S Translate, a built-in realtime translator that supports nine different languages and a way to help you pass that tricky Spanish class. S Voice Drive improves your GPS driving capabilities while a built-in IR transmitter allows you to control your TV and other entertainment devices.

Internally, this bad boy is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa processor, which is labeled as the “world’s first  8-core mobile processor”. However, models in certain regions will only ship with a quad-core processor. In addition to that, the S4 comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of on-board storage along with a large, 2,600mAh battery.

The Galaxy S4 from Samsung is set to ship in April on 327 carriers in 155 countries around the world, including the United States, where the device will be available in both 4G LTE and 3G varieties on carriers Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and a few others.
