Green Monday Sees Prices Drop on the Kindle Fire HD and Nook Simple Touch

Green MondayAmazon and Barnes & Noble have decided to cut the prices on the Kindle Fire HD and the Nook eReader tablets as the holiday shopping season heads into full swing. $50 was dropped off the Amazon Kindle Fire HD for one day only, though the Nook Simple Touch was permanently dropped by $20 to $79.

Amazon is also offering $50 off the 8.9″ version of the Kindle Fire HD, allowing you to pick up the 16GB WiFi only version for $250 and the 32GB WiFi only version for $450. Amazon is, however, limiting the deal to one per customer and you have to use the promo code FIREHD89 at checkout to get the savings. Amazon also said that the deal is only available while supplies last.

Barnes & Noble dropped the price of the Nook Simple Touch to $79, which seems to be a permanent change and brings the device closer to the price of the cheapest Kindle offered by Amazon at $69. However, for an extra $10 over the Kindle, the Nook includes a touchscreen, one feature that the basic Kindle doesn’t have, plus it doesn’t come with advertising.

Aside from that, the base versions of the Kindle and the Nook are pretty much the same. Both devices offer 6″ E Ink Pear displays, long battery lives, Wifi and a compact size. The Nook does have a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB of storage and gives you free access to WiFi at more than 24,000 AT&T hotspots.

These deals come as a part of Green Monday, a savings day reminiscent of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Green Monday is the second Monday in December and was originally started by eBay. A lot of online retailers say they see a sharp increase in sales on Green Monday, with big companies like Walmart saying it saw its highest online traffic in 2011 on Green Monday.
