Asus Taichi 21 Hybrid Headed to the U.S.

Asus Taichi 21Asus has just announced U.S. availability for its all new laptop-tablet hybrid known as Taichi. The Taichi looks like a standard Ultrabook at first glance, with an 11.6″ touchscreen when in laptop mode. However, closing the laptop starts up an additional 11.6″ touchscreen on the back of the panel, turning the Taichi into a fully-functioning tablet.

According to a statement on Asus’ website, “You’ve seen notebooks and tablets. But you’ve never seen anything like the Asus Taichi 21.” The Taichi is set to ship with Windows 8, Microsoft’s new touchscreen-optimized operating system, along with two  1,920 x 1,080 full HD touchscreens. The Taichi was very popular at this year’s Computex trade show back in June with Asus saying, at the time, that it was also planning on shipping a 13.3″ version of the Taichi as well.

The only downside here is that the dual-screen wonders of the Taichi aren’t cheap. The Taichi 21 DH51 with an Intel Core i5 processor and 128GB solid-state drive will cost you $1,299 regardless of whether you buy it from Amazon, B&H, Newegg or TigerDirect. A Taichi 21 DH71 with an Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB SSD can be ordered for $1,299 from Amazon or $1,599 from Newegg and TigerDirect.

Both models will ship soon and both will offer up to five hours of battery life on a 6-cell battery and will also include 4GB of memory, Intel integrated graphics, WiFi and Bluetooth. Both hybrids also have micro-HDMI ports and two USB 3.0 ports and weigh in at about 2.7 lbs and also come with a 5MP webcam.
