A Smaller Version of the iPad in the Future?

According to a Bloomberg report released on Tuesday, July 3, Apple is in the middle of creating a smaller, less expensive version of the iPad. They hope to produce a tablet that will go up against competitors with smaller tablets like Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

According to the report, the new, smaller iPad will feature “a screen that’s 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally,” which will make it much smaller than the current iPad which measures 9.7-inches.

The report went on to say, “The product, which Apple may announce by October, won’t have the high-definition screen featured on the iPad that was released in March.”

Bloomberg cited their information sources as people “who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t made its plans public.”

If Apple were to truly produce a product that was cheaper and maintained the main functionality of a regular iPad, Apple’s competitors could be in for some major competition. Most people highly respect Apple’s brand, so if you are putting an Apple tablet up against a similarly priced tablet from another company, most people are going to choose Apple’s product.

Shaw Wu, an analyst for Sterne Agee & Leach Inc., said that a smaller iPad “would be the competitors’ worst nightmare. The ball is in Apple’s court.”

Despite all of the hype, it is important to consider what the late Steve Jobs said about a smaller version of the iPad.

“There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touchscreen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps… The seven-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone, and too small to compete with an iPad…Seven-inch tablets are going to be DOA—Dead on Arrival.”

Jobs seemed very confident in his belief that a seven-inch tablet simply will not cut it. It does not offer the user enough space to do what they really want to do on a tablet. It is unclear as to whether or not Apple still holds true to the beliefs that Jobs had about smaller tablets. It will be interesting to see if the rumors of a smaller iPad do indeed pan out to be true.
